Japan banks’ domestic assets at $9.4t in January

Banks hold an additional US$1.6t of assets in their overseas branches.

Japanese banks’ total assets held at domestic branches came at over JPY1,421t (about US$9.4t) as of end-January 2024, according to preliminary figures from the Bank of Japan (BOJ). 

Total deposits domestically came at JPY973.8t (US$6.48t) over the same period, of which JPY6.18t (US$41.15b) are ordinary deposits, and JPY2.25t (US$14.9b) are time deposits.

Banks hold an additional JPY242.5t (US$1.6t) of assets in overseas branches, of which JPY99.08t (approximately US$660b) are deposits.
